Balls on the Rebound
Experiment with the On the Rebound Drop Chamber to learn about the technolgoy behind bouncing balls. Balls bounce because of their elasticity. As the ball hits the surface, its shape is changed for a brief moment. As it returns to the original shape, it will rebound off the surface. As you drop balls in the Drop Chamber, experiment with what happend when you vary the ball, the air pressure inside the ball, the kind of surface, the height you drop it from, or ??? Keep careful notes.

Bouncing Baseballs   From the Exploratorium, this site explores the science of bouncing balls and introduces an interesting variable. Find out what it is and give it a try.
That's the Way the Ball Bounces   Read this story and find out how it involves Babe Ruth, baseball's home run king.
How Things Work: the Physics of Everyday Life   This site provides an explanation of the physics that explain why balls bounce.
How Things Work: the Physics of Everyday Life   This site explores the effect of changing air pressure on a bouncing ball.
Bouncing Balls: Simulation 1   View a simulation of a bouncing ball. The simulation helps develop understanding of the actions that occur as a ball bounces.
Bouncing Balls: Simulation 2   This is another simulation of a boucing ball. It allows you to change some of the variables and watch to see the effect.
