• Used colored folders for each subject. This helps organization. • Plan out homework time. Figure out how long each assignment will take then write a schedule for work and break times. • Some children do well if they work on the easier assignments first. For other children, tackling the harder assignments while they are still fresh may work better. • Have a homework place – it should be comfortable, well-lit, quiet and with minimal distractions. Have supplies available such as pencils, scissors, glue, etc. • Teach your child how to break big jobs into little pieces. A social studies project, for example may include a map, the cover page, research, a bibliography, first page, etc., Help your child think of each part and write a schedule of when he will have them done. • Make sure your child has a homework calendar. • Don’t provide the answer. Be available to answer questions. Work through a sample problem together, but don’t do the work! • Make use of library homework help centers, homework helplines, etc. • Review graded assignments to see where your child needs assistance. • Try a study group. • Have a car homework container. • Have a set homework free day and have some fun.
