“The Truth”

The Tiger Rising, written by Kate Dicamillo is the book we read in class during December. My favorite scene in the book is when Rob talks with Willie May and she tells Rob he needs to let his sadness rise up out of his legs to get rid of his rash. Willie May is an insightful and honest person. She is able to figure people out and is honest when she talks to people. Rob is sad and private boy. Ever since his Mom died he does not want to be happy and doesn’t’ share his feelings with anyone.
I would call this scene “The Truth”. I choose this title because Willie May tells Rob what he doesn’t want to hear.  Rob keeps all his feelings locked up in his “suitcase” and doesn’t want to share them. Rob and his father are running from the truth of his mother dying and the sadness that goes with it.  Rob doesn’t realize that Willie May says is the truth.
I choose this scene because I like the character of Willie May. Kate Dicamillo describes her as a no nonsense type of person. She seems like someone who would be interesting to meet in real life. I like how Willie May can figure people out  and is honest with them about what she sees. I think Willie May would be a good friend to have. I also choose this scene because Willie May says that just because people are smart doesn’t mean they have sense.  She might not be book smart but she is people smart.
This scene is important to the book because Willie May points out what Rob’s problem is for the first time. Rob talks about keeping his “suitcase” locked but he seems lonely and very sad. Willie May tells him that he needs to open his “suitcase” and that he needs to let himself be sad which is okay.
This scene made me like Willie May for being so honest with Rob. I think it is sad that no one else in his life tells him it is okay to be sad about his Mother’s death. This scene also makes me sad for Rob because he doesn’t realize that Willie May is right. It makes me wonder how long he will go on being lonely and sad and if he will ever open his “suitcase” to happiness and sadness.
