Springtime in the NorthWoods-April, 2005

We were orginally scheduled for a summer visit, but had to reschedule due to SAT10 testing conflicts. So on April 6th we headed north to the Audubon Center for the three day visit we have worked so hard for and were so excited about. We caught the tail end of maple syruping, challenged ourselves on the rope courses, and took a trip to the wetland.

We are anxious to share our story of our trip to the Audubon Center of the NorthWoods.
We had to look close to find evidence of insects in the woods. Community life included kp - kitchen patrol. Might not be at home, but kp at the Audubon Center was a highlight. In between classes, we played games on the Center's grounds. Once we got up the pole, we had to begin crossing each of the elements on the high ropes course. Following a "Challenge by Choice" philosophy, some students chose to take the longer, more challenging route. All students were rewarded by the final zip slide back down to the ground. In the evenings, the Audubon Center staff shared a program with us. The Audubon Center has their own raptor recovery program and house a number of birds. We got to get up close to some of these. The first step in getting maple syrup is picking the right tree and drilling a hole about two inches deep. Then we pound a tap into the hole to catch the sap as it flows up and down the tree. Before hanging the pail on the tap, some of us caught a drip directly from the tree. After the sap is collected, it is brought into the sugar shack to boil down into syrup.
